Montbenoît, the capital of the Republic of Saugeais, is less than an hour’s drive from Besançon, the capital of the historic and cultural region of Franche-Comté, and just about thirty minutes from the Swiss border. If you prefer to take the train, hop aboard the legendary “Ligne des Horlogers,” which connects Besançon to Le Locle-Col-des-Roches in Switzerland, and get off at the economic capital of Saugeais: Gilley.
The Saugeais region warmly welcomes long-distance hikers, whether they’re on foot, by bike, or even on horseback! The Vy-aux-Moines trail allows hikers arriving from Switzerland to follow a cultural and scenic route dotted with informational signs and picturesque sites. Just a stone’s throw from the Grande Traversée du Jura (GTJ) route and thanks to the “train path” — a pleasant route for cyclists and hikers—you can peacefully enjoy the landscapes of the Haut-Doubs.
