What is the Saugeais?

Franche-Comté and Haut-Doubs, the birthplaces of Saugeais

A bit of history and geography

The historical and cultural unity of this territory, covering an area of approximately 130 square kilometers, can be traced back to a past with roots stretching back thousands of years, when the monks settled in Montbenoît were entrusted with the exclusive management of the surrounding lands—a situation that persisted until the 18th century.

In this semi-mountainous setting , a rich culinary tradition has flourished within a close-knit community.

The man from Saugeais has made a name for himself

The name of the area is spelled SAUGEAIS, and its inhabitants are known as SAUGETTES and SAUGETS. The exact origin of the term remains a mystery; all we can say with certainty is that the word “Saugey” appears in a papal bull dating from 1199…

One territory, one Republic

From Historic Saugeais to an Iconic Republic

Although they live in eleven neighboring villages, the residents of the Saugeais region have been governed by common laws for centuries . United by their shared history centered on the Abbey of Montbenoît, they identify as “Saugets” above all else.

This sentiment, which endured despite the dissolution of the monastic congregation in 1773, led to the creation of traditions unique to the Saugeais region, the composition of a national anthem in the Sauget dialect (1910)… and the birth, amid bursts of laughter, of a unique institution.

The Unexpected Journey of a Micronation

In 1947, the Republic of Saugeais was born out of a joke between the Prefect of Doubs and Georges Pourchet, owner of the Hôtel de l’Abbaye in Montbenoît. Following this unique founding, the vibrant micronation experienced a resurgence in popularity in the 1960s, as the Saugeais community rallied around the restoration of its abbey.

The momentum is building: the Republic of Saugeais continues to captivate and make a name for itself!

Born with a smile

The Republic of Saugeais began as a joke…

In 1947, Louis Ottaviani, Prefect of the Doubs, was visiting Montbenoît when he was welcomed at the Hôtel de l’Abbaye by the owner , Georges Pourchet, who asked him if he had a pass authorizing him to enter the Sauget region. After hearing the unique story of this small territory with its strong cultural identity, he replied to Georges Pourchet, “You are, in essence, a republic, and a republic needs a president. I therefore appoint you President of the Republic of Saugeais!”
