Established at the initiative of Yves Dornier, a journalist at L’Est Républicain and a devoted friend of the Saugeais region, the honorary title of Honorary Citizen of the Republic of Saugeais was originally awarded to volunteers and prominent figures who had contributed financially to the restoration of Montbenoît Abbey. Over time, the distinction has evolved to recognize prominent figures from the religious, political, and military spheres, as well as representatives of organizations and individuals with more modest but significant backgrounds.
Honorary Citizens Day is traditionally held throughout the Republic on the first Sunday in October. It includes a religious service at Montbenoît Abbey, a ceremony at the war memorial in memory of the residents of Sauget who fell in wars, and a festive meal attended by between 400 and 500 people. During this event, the new Honorary Citizens are inducted, receiving a certificate and a badge, as well as a solemn invitation “to uphold the traditions of Les Saugets.”
