FOCUS ON A FOUNDING DOCUMENT

Officially adopted in March 1458, the Coutumier du Saugeais is a seminal document in the legal and social history of the territory of Montbenoît Abbey. The result of an exceptional collaboration between the monks and the inhabitants of Saugeais, it codifies local customs in 112 articles, covering agricultural and social life as well as community rules. This text, which remained in force until the French Revolution, is avaluable testament to the identity of the Saugeais region as well as a rare example, for its time, of joint participation in the development of law.

"RIGHTS, PRACTICES, AND CUSTOMS" OF THE SAUGEAIS REGION

“The people of Saugeais are quick-witted and have a way with words”: the Coutumier reflects a pragmatic rural wisdom that enables them to cope with all the situations of daily life. Among these is an attack by the fearsome predator, the wolf—a hazard whose consequences are carefully regulated by the Coutumier.

NO ONE IS SUPPOSED TO IGNORE THE LAW!
